2008 OBITUARIES
January
Helen "Dede" Bothwell, on
January 7th, in Granada Hills. She is survived by her
brother Tom Gillespie, sisters Nancy Rea and Terry
Christian. Helen leaves 10 grandchildren and 4
great-grandchildren. Helen has joined her beloved husband Leon
and son Steven in heaven. Vince Gilboy is Helen's first
cousin.
March
Timothy J. "Joe" Sullivan, born
April 20, 1933; died March 11, 2008.
Funeral was at St. John Baptist de la Salle, in Granada Hills, on
March 15.
June
Richard "Skip" Driscoll passed
away on June 18th at his home in Prescott, Arizona.
He was born in Boston on 25th May 1941. After completing four
years in the United States Air Force he worked as an engineer
in the aerospace industry in St Louis. That's where he met
Rosemary Reddy. Skip and Rosemary were married on 26th
June 1965 in St Louis. Later they moved to Southern California
where Skip continued working in the aerospace industry. Skip and
Rosemary, while raising their three children, Coleen, Rick and Rob
got very involved with their church activities and with the
Irish community. Skip retired in 2004 from Litton/Northrop.
Shortly
thereafter they moved to Prescott. Skip and Rosemary soon
got involved with the American Red Cross, Heritage Zoo and
other non profit groups in Prescott. Skip is survived
by his loving wife, Rosemary, daughter Coleen, sons Rick (Lorena),
Rob (Lindsay) and five grandchildren Victoria, Eileen, Samantha,
Katelyn and Emily. The grandchildren will sure miss "Pop Pop."
Skip is also survived by his brother Dennis (Judy) Driscoll in
Cave Creek, Arizona.
July
Maria C Angeletti was born on 10th
December 1937 in Shankill, Co. Dublin. Came to Los Angeles with
her mother in 1947. After education at St Monica's and
Mount St Mary's she returned to Dublin and obtained her
B.A. from University College, Dublin. In 1959 mother and
daughter moved to Rome to work on a movie. In Rome, Maria met
and married her husband with whom she had a son, Kevin. In
the late 1960's the family returned to Los Angeles.
Maria, while working at MGM, decided at the age of 42 to attend
Loyola Law School and was admitted to the California State Bar
in 1984. At MGM, Maria was Senior Vice President of
Corporate Affairs and Assistant Secretary when she retired in
2000. She passed away on July 12th from lung cancer. She
is survived by her son, Kevin. "She was born
with the gift of laughter and believed the world was mad
."
Jayne Westin,
predeceased by her loving husband, Dr Wil Westin, passed
away at her home
in La Canada. Services took place at Glendale Forest Lawn
on Friday 25th July 2008. Reverend Charles Orr, Pastor
of Westwood Presbyterian Church, presided. When Rev Orr was
appointed Pastor in Westwood in 1970, Dr Wil and Jayne
were the first couple he married.
Mrs Westin attended the Irish Center's St Patrick's
Celebration for the past several years. We extend our sympathy
to Ms. Heather Westin on the loss of her
mom.
Robert F. Walsh passed away at his
home in Burbank on July24th. "Bob" was
predeceased in death by his wife Nora. He is survived by
his sisters-in-law Kathleen and Teresa; his brother-in-law
Brendan; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services
were held on July 29th at San Fernando Mission Chapel.
Elizabeth "Betty" O'Sullivan,
widow of the late Sean O'Sullivan (The Spa, Tralee) passed
away at her home in San Mateo on July 24th. Survived
by her brothers-in-law Monsignor Jeremiah O'Sullivan,
Coronado; Martin O'Sullivan, Sun Valley; Liam
O'Sullivan, Kildare; Tommy O'Sullivan, Dublin; and
Eamon O'Sullivan, Dublin; and sister-in-law, Hannah Mary
O'Sullivan, Los Angeles. Betty is also survived by
several nephews and nieces.
Josephine "JoJo" O'Reilly
Mungovan passed away on July 26th. She
was born in Detroit in 1918. She is survived by four sons
and one daughter, eleven grandchildren and eight great
grandchildren. Predeceased by daughter Sheila in
2001. Survivors: Son Dennis and wife Sue, and their
family, John, Kathy, twins Brendan and Laura O'Reilly. John
has two children AnnaRita and Brittney, and Laura has
Lindsey, Lauryn and Lacey. Son Terry and wife Darla and
their family Terren, Kaitlin, Brendan P.O'Reilly.
Sons Pat O'Reilly and Tim O'Reilly. Daughter
Maureen and husband Bill Chalk and their family, Liam,
Kevin, Janel and Sean Chalk. Liam's children are Kaiya
and Emma, and Janel has Riley. JoJo celebrated her 90th
birthday on the April 3rd, surrounded by her loving and
extended family. The celebration of JoJo's life took
place at St Jerome's Church on 2nd August.
Thomas "Tommy" McCooey
passed away on July 28th in North Hollywood, where
he had lived for 50 years. Tommy was born in Ballybay,
Co Monahan. Tommy is survived by his sisters in Ireland,
Ohio and New York. The funeral mass took place at St
Patrick's in North Hollywood on August 8th.

2007 OBITUARIES
Dermot O'Brien, Louth's 1957
All-Ireland football winning captain, has passed away.
Dermot was a renowned musician and singer; his recording of
"The Merry Ploughboy" went straight to number one in
the Irish Charts in 1966. www.rte.ie
Christopher A. Byrne born in Dublin passed away in
Downey on 7th January 2007. Christy was a professional
soccer player in Ireland and England. Survived by wife Phyliss,
children and grandchildren.
Angela Behan Hanlon born in Ireland passed away on 7th
January 2007 in Los Angeles. She leaves son Damien,
daughter Sheila and three grandchildren. Mrs Hanlon owned
Molly Malones Pub on Fairfax in Los Angeles.
Fred Mole was born in Dublin and passed away in
Murrietta on 8th February 2007. Fred moved to England as a
teenager. He served in Her Majesty's Royal Army in Korea with
Honors. On his return to England he married his wife Margaret
and they settled in Manchester. They eventually moved to
Southern California. Fred is survived by Margaret,son William,
daughter Amanda their spouses and children.
Patrick J. "Sean" Brady, born in Dublin on 3rd
April 1922 passed away in Santa Monica on 10th February. Survived by his son, daughter and grandchildren. Sean
was a musican and actor.
Desmond James O'Regan born in Moycullen, Co Galway
passed away on 19th February in North Hollywood. Survived
by his children Siobhan, Dessy,Brendan and grandchildren.
"Des Regan" was a business man, entertainer and a
renowned musican.
Phyllis L. O'Brien, born in Portland, Maine passed
away in Burbank on 21st February. Survived by her
husband Mark, one son and grandchildren.
Jeremiah F O'Shea, born on 9th September 1906 in
County Limerick passed away in Burbank on 6th March.
Jerry came to this country in 1928. Left his wife Caroline,
children Michael, Anthony, and Anna Maria and spouses. Jerry
and his wife off 66 years had seven grandchildren and two
great grandchildren.
Sheila McDonagh, born in Dublin and passed away
in Alhambra on 26th March. Survived by husband Michael,
son Patrick, daughters Noreen (John) Rubino, and Roseanna
McDonagh and grandson Jack .
Joseph "Jogger" Hanley, born in Limerick passed
away in Tarzana on 4th May. Joe joins his beloved wife
Peggy who passed on 13th April 2005 and their infant son
Michael. Joe, who captained the Richmond Rugby Football
Club to the Munster Junior Cup title in 1945-46, is survived
by five sons, one daughter and spouses and fourteen
grandchildren.
Catherine Therese O'Connor, ( Cathy ) was born in New
Castle West, Co Limerick on 7th May 1930 and passed away in
Tehachapi on 7th May, aged 77. She was the 7th child in her
family. She is survived by her husband Kevin, whom she met in
1957; six sons--Tom, Kevin Jr., John, Dennis, P. Vincent,
Brendan and their spouses; two daughters-- Maureen and
Kathleen (and spouses); and eighteen grandchildren.
Bernice Shea, born 4th February 1912, passed away on
27th May. Bernice has joined her Co. Kerry-born
husband Dennis in heaven. Bernice is survived by her son
Daniel (Jane) and her daughter Maureen (Norm) Reeder.
William Joseph Sullivan, born
in Ardgroom Co. Cork, passed away in La Mirada on 11th
June. He is survived by his wife Eileen, sons William Jr,
Kevin Patrick, Sean Michael, daughter Margaret Mary Johnson
and eight grandchildren. A brother, Pete Sullivan,
lives in Newport Beach.
Sister Christina Gibbons,
a Sister of St Louis for 58 years was killed in tragic car
accident on 11th June. Sister Christina, who was born in
Westport, Co Mayo, taught or was Principal at St Bede's, La
Canada; Corpus Christi, Pacific Palisades; St Cyprian's, Long
Beach; St Anthony Claret, Anaheim; St Louis of France, La
Puente. She leaves two sisters,

Sheila Gunning and a huge extended family.
Joseph Henry Giles, born
in Galway, died on July 10th, in La Puente. He was
predeceased by his wife, Mary. He is survived by six
children, sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Nancy Welsh passed away on the 21st of July. Services
were held at St. Jerome's, 5550 Thornburn Street, Los
Angeles. Our condolences to her daughter, Theresa.
Mary Ann
Murphy died on July 31st. Both she and her late
husband John were stalwarts of the Irish-American community for
decades. Mary Ann is survived by their six children:
Mary Ann and her partner, Lynn; John Michael and his wife
Sheila; Patrick; Timothy and his wife Corrinne; Barbara; Daniel
and his wife Patti; and seventeen grandchilren.
Tommy Makem, songwriter and storyteller,
who teamed with the Clancy Brothers to become stars during the
folk music boom, has died of cancer in Dover, New Hampshire,
where he lived for many years. President Mary McAleese of
Ireland led the tributes to Makem after his death: "Always
the consummate musician, he was also a superb ambassador for the
country, and one of whom we will be always be proud."
Sister Merlyn Galway passed away
August 16th as a result of a car accident. Survived by her
father Robert, sister Ruth and family. Deeply mourned by her
Community, the Sisters of the Holy Faith. Burial in
Dublin.
Mary C. Irish passed away on 27th
August. Mary was born in Aghada, Co Cork, 88 years
ago. She was raised in Newport, Rhode Island. She
lived in San Gabriel for 56 years. Paul, her
husband, passed in 2000. Mary is survived by
four sons, Paul, Thomas, Brian and John. Also
survived by four grandchildren, Tom, Nickolas, Michael and
Sarah.
William Christopher Mulligan was born
in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh and passed away on August 31st.
Mourned by his wife Ruby, daughter Janine, and grandchildren
Ashley and William.
Oliver "Ollie" Foley
passed away in Montrose on 15th September. Born in
Dublin in 1934. Leaves his wife Rita, daughters
Riosin and Deirdre, sons Noel and Fergus and grandchildren
Ryan, Allison, Nicholas and Liam.
Dermot Cooper was born in Dublin
Sept 4th, 1937. Came to this country in 1963. Passed away
in Pasadena on Sept 29th. Leaves a family of three
children, eight grandchildren, two brothers, nieces and
nephews.
Kathleen
"Katie" O'Brien was born in Mallow, Co
Cork. Katie passed away peacefully in her sleep
on 9th October. She was preceded in death by
her husband of 54 years, Denis O'Brien M.D., on 17th
October 1997. Mrs. O'Brien is survived by her brothers, John
and Tom Kiely, in England. Burial in
Mitchelstown, Co Cork.
Frank O'Hea passed away on 3rd
December. He joins his wife Patricia, who
predeceased him last year. Frank was born in
Bandon. He leaves daughters Grace and Eileen and
sons Johnny and Patrick.
Monsignor Hugh O'Connor, who was
born in Sneem, Co. Kerry, on 19th November 1914, passed
away at St. John's Santa Monica on 20th December. He
was ordained a priest in 1939. "Father
Hugh," as he was affectionately known, served in Los
Angeles and Orange County parishes. He is survived
by his sister in Dublin and many nephews and nieces.
Nora Dolan, 86, in
Galway. Survived by her five children, including
Father Jarlath Dolan in Los Angeles. Mrs. Dolan also
leaves 15 grandchildren and 10 great-
grandchildren.

to Padraig Timmons
and Theresa Marie Savage
on their marriage on July 28th. The service took place in Holy
Trinity Church, Ratoath, Co. Meath. The reception followed in
Tattersalls County House, Ratoath. Theresa lived in Alhambra and
was a member of the Los Angeles Set Dancers. She met Padraig at a
"Willie Clancy Week" in Co. Clare several years ago.

Roots Magazine.
Kris Drever's debut album "Black Water"
has been highly praised by Q Magazine and MOJO. The artist was
honored in February 2007 with the prestigious Horizon Award at
the 2007 BBC2 Folk Awards
Beoga are a five piece traditional band based in County
Antrim. Their latest album "Beogamischief" capture
their passion, energy and vitality.
"Grada" is the third album by Cloudy Day Navigation
released on Compass Records. The tunes are mainly self
penned, a mix of traditional and contemporary sources. The
artists include Alan Doherty (Lord of the Rings)from Tallaght.
Dublin, Nicola Joyce is from Galway, Gerry Paul was born in
Dublin. Fiddler Colin Farrell grew up in Manchester.
Master
musicians Paul Brock and Enda Scahill have evoked the atmosphere
and artistry of the Irish dance hall era in dazzling fashion
with the first ever CD of traditional music on the melodeon and
tenor banjo--"Humdinger."
Paul, a multiple All Ireland champion, was born in
Athlone and Enda Scahill is from Corofin, County Galway.
"The New Shoes" is Nuala Kennedy's latest musical
project. "Bright and rhythmic--a voice of luminous
clarity" ---The Herald(UK). Originally from Dundalk, Co
Louth, Nuala now resides in Edinburgh.
Tannahill Weavers has made an international name for its
special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of
traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. This new
album "Live and in Session" combines favorites from
their USA tour and new material.
